In the true spirit of taxi trade unity and to make a statement of intent, the RMT London taxi branch announce the convening of an ALL inclusive "London taxi trade organisations" meeting.
On the agenda will be, the Law Commission and all other major issues which may effect the London taxi trade and our livelihoods in the near future.
A neutral venue, date and time to be suggested soon
A formal and respectful invitation will be sent to each organisation in turn.

Editorial comment:
Could this be a turning point in trade politics?
Well, now the new General Secretary of the LTDA has a chance of showing the trade if he is serious, after the article he wrote in Taxi Paper stating that the only way forward for the trade is in unison.
what? i thought this was a taxi blog, since when did rmt support the hard working self employed cabbie?

We will forget the first post. Because someone has the KoL does not mean they are intelligent!
ReplyDeleteA really welcome move especially as it excludes no one and you can be sure that TfL and the mayor will go on a dirty tricks campaign as well as calling in the UTG to persuade them otherwise (more marshalling for some?)
A big gesture needing a big response, well done the RMT taxi branch.
Ted,your missing the point was it not oddy that would not sit down with others, after all that's why we then had the lcdc and now the rmt, with a new General Secretary of the LTDA lets hope things start to happen because time is running out.

I'm a unison lead steward part time cabbie. But joining the Rmt monday like the way they go about things.
ReplyDeleteThe United Cabbies Group will happily attend an ALL TRADE MEETING... as long as ALL trade organisations are there on an EQUAL FOOTING WITHOUT PRE-CONDITIONS... and all meetings are DOCUMENTED WITH MINUTES.
ReplyDeleteWe look forward to the invitation.
The Old Guard wont like it!
ReplyDeleteIf the LTDA,LCDC and UNITE decline this offer then let every driver be aware that they have put self interest before the interests of all.
ReplyDeleteThis is music to my ears !
ReplyDeleteWell done our green lanyard colleagues for taking the initiative and recognising the threat.
Football supporters mentality in this trade has always been the reason that it fails to grow and prosper.
Egos, bravado, macho big guy image and self interest has prevented our profession from gaining anywhere near the strength that we can and should be.
I am suprised at the lack of concern or panic regarding the Law Commissioners involvement. This poking about by these extremely powerful body could be the end of the great London Cab Trade as we know it.
I bet anything that whatever the Commissioners recommend, it will be detrimental to our current standing.
We are notorious for looking after today and bollox to tomorrow, but this really could be the end of us if we take our finger off the pulse.
I am not a member of RMT Taxi Branch, but have many good, staunch mates who are.
I take my hat off to the organisers of this meeting. At last we as a profession are realising that our trade is under serious threat. Trying to ridicule an organisation for attempting to create unity, is both ludicrous and prehistoric.
Well done RMT, lets fight for our legacy and survival together.

Well done the RMT and well done the Anderson Shelter.
ReplyDeleteThr whole trade can look forward to a time when we truely unite.
TfL andLTPH will be gutted to think they can no longer devise and Conquer
If any trade organisation refuses this meeting then they're members should consider resigning.
This trade needs to go forward but in unison.
We have to stop letting ourselves being bought off for a few marshalling jobs
Well done Jim. This has got to be the most important post you had made on this blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I see the point - we need more demos, not more unity. It doesn't matter which org picks the time and date because everyone who wants to show up shows up.
ReplyDeleteI think its been proved time and time again demos dont work,They disrupt the public,we get a few promises then thing stay exactly as they are.
DeleteDuring my time in our trade, my time on the LTDF, and my time as a founder member of the UCG, I have never pubicly or openly criticised Bob Oddy, The LTDA, The LCDC, Grant Davies or any of the other officers.
ReplyDeleteNaturally, I have had my personal and private views on the positions of certain people who have been in higher command within our trade, but I feel that to slate are own colleagues is detrimental all round.
And I am not about to do it now. HOWEVER.......surely the new leader of LTDA Steve MacNamara, must take up this trade saving offer of unity from RMT ? after all, he has recently stated that the trade needs unity.....and who could argue with that ?
Surely Grant Davies must see this as a ground breaking opportunity to cement up the fragmented past ?
I know that these two units are not the only outfits out there, but they probably make up the remainder of the members who are not part of UCG or RMT.
My thoughts are though.........will they take up the RMT's invitation to put our trade into the strong and challenging position it should be ?
Will the egos and football team mentality still block the road in ?
Are the chants of 'Unity' a promotional bluff, or do the leaders of the 'families' REALLY want to see the whole London Cab Trade unite ?
With the offer of our green lanyard colleagues firmly on the table, our profession is about to find out who cares for our future, and who cares for themselves.
I have fingers crossed as I type this post, and my heart is wishing that sense prevail.
Will we all get around RMT's trade fighting table, and help unite our future ?
As the cat said when it shit behind the door.......'That remains to be seen !'
We shall all know very soon.

Lets see if you really want unity Mr M let's break with the lies and half truths come to the real united trade meeting and lets get on with the job of uniting the trade and stopping the rot.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a no brainer to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is the last thing Hendy & Mason want which means its the FIRST we should want!
If any trade org. turns down the invite then they should lose plenty of members and would no longer have ANY credibilty.
