An extraordinary branch meeting took place, on Wednesday 22nd February.
Various motions for the administration of the branch where discussed, Charlie Miller brought a motion forward, calling for industrial action to be held strategically at Stratford, on the grounds of;
•No representation at TfL (Taxi Engagement Policy)
•No access to the Olympic Route Network (ORN).
•The issue of the Identifiers being implemented without proper consultation.
•Newham councils removal of Taxi rank spaces/removal of Taxi rank signage with consultation with any driver representative body.
The motion was carried unanimously. The industrial action will take place this evening at 5pm.
Charlie Miller who, on behalf on the RMT represents over 200 local drivers said "a letter had been sent by recorded delivery some weeks ago, to LTPH director John Mason to arrange a meeting, but as of this morning, Mason had failed to reply.
It appears that John Mason's deputy director, Helen Chapman, along with representatives from Newham council, met with four drivers last Monday. We have been informed by the RMT suburban rep, these drivers have no mandate to represent anyone other than their own self interests. Charlie said Mason is adamant he will not speak with anyone from the RMT.
This afternoons action looks set to bring the area around the Olympic site (and most of East London) to a complete standstill.
The Anderson Shelter has been informed that drivers from other trade groups will also be attending this demonstration which is thought to be a pre cursor to other action planned in future, over worries from the trade about the way we have been left out of arrangements concerning the Olympic park.

Good turnout I thought, though why Charlie and his sidekick were dressed like plastic gangsters is beyond me.Charlie spoke well on bbc london and the traffic didn't move for over an hour. If we keep this up there might just be a bit of hope that they'll listen.

ReplyDeleteIt is no time at all since Jason B said that the identifier is a closed book as it is to be introduced yet later AS publishes a request for a demo and one of the issues being demonstrated about is the IDs! So the issue is not dead / done and dusted as up it pops again.

You say there is an agenda, well yes there could be an agenda on why certain drivers and the RMT are against the IDs. This has been raised before but due to the AS policy it seems some can’t counter or question why the RMT has raised the ID issue again.
For my part I do not follow an agenda set by others and I make my own mind up on nearly all things.
Would have had some sympathy except one of the drivers in this protest nearly ran me down going through a red light as I was crossing near the bus station. In hindsight I should have taken his registration, and I'm tempted to go to the police to see if there is any CCTV near those lights. While you have the right to protest you don't have the right to endanger lives.

You cant suddenly realise its the scabs, because they've always been there and you said NOTHING. Looks like you'll have to get creative in the future, otherwise you old lady's gonna find out you've been impressing two bob cab drivers when you should have been getting the minimum credit card payment.
What a wonderful turn out by the licensed Taxi trade at Stratford yesterday afternoon, we got just past angel lane and the whole of Stratford from where i was positioned came to a stand still by around 5.15pm, and the first police officer that i saw arrived at 6.15pm.

ReplyDeleteHad my yellow ids in for two weeks now and have been shown nothing but respect by all but one driver who dropped off his passenger and decided to remain in the drop off/pick up bay outside charing X hospital to eat his lunch and obstruct my pick up once he'd spotted my ids. Even he changed his attitude when he realised that I was picking up a disabled old lady and needed the kerb height to aid her ability to get in the cab.

I now realise that if I had gone to his window and said I was on a radio job that I accepted on the arndale rank and needed to get close to the kerb for my disabled passinger he would have moved immediately.
I know some will say " I shouldnt have to explain my actions" but let me remind you this was 1 in two weeks, and I bet his attitude to the next yellow badge will be different.
If your in town legit and someone asks 'what do you think your doing?' the answer 'a £30er from Richmond' (or wherever) eases the tension and raises a smile.
I reckon half the so called 'dirty looks' are in the heads of suburban drivers who are projecting an attitude of insolence in town and other drivers are reacting.
Pretty soon everyone will accept that the canaries seen in town are legit and wont even notice us.

ReplyDeleteIf I had been consulted about the design of the IDs, I would of asked for the YB Sector numbers to be made bigger, I cant read the Sector number of the driver in front of me on the rank even. They are useless at this size.

The LCDC 'faces' work LCA anmd it is alleged behind a misinformation campaign telling punters only use a 'green ID cab'.
Its Feck All to do with fairness and justice but a crude attempt to exclude YB's from the LCA as it is understood that approaches to do just that have been made to LCA management by 'concerned drivers'.
It seem a pound note is all that behind it all and of course a non effective attempt to stop use of the 'hooky bills'!

im a yellow badge and i work city airport now the ids are in i dont have to tell anyone what its like at the airport . the ids are here to stay and i think its a good thing. i believe it will get better for us yellows but it will take time so just hang in there chaps well just have to be patient . everyone moans about the green s and the ids but anyone who has a green badge has worked hard for it so dont knock em chaps we just all need to be one and fight the real enemis that are slowley but sureley killing us off the mini scabbs

I work City and I have to say that you could have cut the atmosphere there with a knife this afternoon/evening.Even yellows who have talked to certain greens for years were offish today. The id was designed to split the trade and that's what it has done. The resentment between the two factions because of the id is oppressive and will only lead to conflict. Maybe the only good ting to come out of the id's is that people will be less inclined to broom and take their lumps, after all no one forced them to queue up for 3 hours at city airport. Keep your camera's handy though and grass the rat that tries to broom.

Surely its only the yellows who were bigging it up and trying to decieve others into believing that they held an All London Licence or green badges who felt they had the right to behave as they wished and avoid complaints by not wearing their badge would be affected by this new legeslation, but surely they are the same drivers refusing to display their ids now under the pretence that they are politically motavated.
Theres no suprise when you see the identifyerless cabs and they all seem to be driven by the wrong uns you've known for years.
The only anamosity I've witnessed over the past few weeks wherever Ive worked is towards those drivers not displaying ids at all.
I have worked without harrassment across town proudly wearing my yellow badge for 15 years and NEVER had a problem. WHY? Cos I NEVER picked up out of Sector so I had nothing to worry about.
The same is true with the Ids now. All the drivers who Ive ever spoken to know exactly what type of badge I hold and always have done, so why would they treat me differently.
The few who would choose not to talk to a yellow badge would never have talked to you so why would anyone be disgruntled unless they felt they had been decieved.

DeleteAfter successfully completing the knowledge of London the applicant then has to learn the nine suburbs consisting of 25 runs. Thats what it says in the blue book. How does a all london driver know the suburbs when he only did 25 runs?? Answer is he don't, he gets them as a little bonus. Suburban drivers do anything from 1 to 2 and a half years doing the knowledge for their badge and trust me its every bit as earned as any green badge. What the bloke was saying is why the fuck would you want to sit in silvertown when you have all london?
Oh and before you shout that greens do 160 runs in the burbs, the extra 135 are only there because a knowledge school wouldn't make much money out of selling a book with 25 runs in it.

i think the rules are quite clear petal,and until they are changed the greenbadge driver has the right to ply for hire anywhere in a six mile radius from charing cross.when the aspiring taxi driver embarked on the knowledge,be it for the green or yellow badge,he or she knew exactly what they were training for.there were no surprises.so the fact surburban drivers spend 1 or 2 years doing the knowledge is immaterial.they must still at the end of it work only in the sector it took them 1 or 2 years to learn.that isnt the greenbadge fault,thats just the way it is petal.also the fact he gets the suburbs as a little bonus is also something the ybs knew when they started the yellow badge.or didnt they read the literature supplied by the pco?from looking at some of these posts i dont think they did.so to summarise,we all knew what we were going into ,good or bad,when we started the knowledge,and bleating and stamping your feet about the unfairness of it all is a bit childish to be honest.you wouldnt start supporting orient then complain in 5 years that horrible man utd always win the premiership would you?hope that helped you in some little way sausage..........

DeleteI think the point that is being missed by most gbs is that the yellows are asking the same question as them. Why didnt you do the knowledge for the area you WANT to work in.
DeleteIt is not in dispute that you are equally entitled to work lca despite being less equiped than someone who has done the knowledge of the area, and of course the inners which are more than efficient to take you into town.
Why spend 3+ learning how to navigate the complex criss crossing mazes of back streets that is required to get from any one point in central london to any other point when all your trips into town will go from one point reducing the required workload by 90%+.
This is the true reason for the brooming of local jobs and the irate behaviour. Its difficult for the All Knowing Greens with their swollen Hippocampuses to admit they dont know as much of the relevent and required knowledge to do the job they have chosen to do.
It is no less illegal to broom a job than it is to tout out of area so despite having the right to ply for hire they are no more equipped or capable than a touting yellow who hasnt done the required knowledge for the area they are working.....because they havent done the required knowledge for the area they are working.
Greens rightly moan that a touting yellow who doesnt know where they are going can and will ruin the reputation and trade of a driver with the knowledge of that area, well just because your licenced for an area that you havent learned the theory and effect does not change.
So why didnt you do the licence for the area yo7 wanted to work?
Were you told the green badge was a licence to print money and not grasp that this was due to the complex job you are expected to do since that is what you sweated blood and tears for years to achieve, not to do a yellow badges job in a yellow badge area. For that privelage you only require the yellow badge for the area and should expect the proportionate wages for the job you chose not to train for.
Wouldnt you question the thinking of a person who wanted to be a doctor but trained much harder to be a vet coz the money was better and then took a gps position (because he was entitled by some odd rule) and wondered where it all went wrong, and why the gps thought were confused as to why he didnt do the much simpler and more relavent and useful training for the job they wanted to do.
I think its a fair question from yellows since as you rightly say they knew the rules and chose the badge they wanted to do, so why didnt you?
When the Law Commision publish thier final offering it will matter nothing as to what colour badge you have.It will be interesting to see how those so enthusiastic about the IDs and lording it over the YBs react to it.Because believe me,it is going to be a disaster for ALL the London trade.

DeleteI think the reason certain green badges work LCA is because their knowledge is not really up to the difficult job of picking up all over town, so they see working LCA and encouraging long distance passengers to walk past the yellow badges to use the first green as a way that they can get their wage back up to green badge levels while having a job which is as easy as a yellow badge's job (no disrespect to yellow badges, but I was one for years and it was a repetitive, easy and stressfree job compared to the endless struggle of what I get my head around now to take a green badge wage now).
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that the identifiers scheme seems to have come from these halfwits, and that they have spread the idea of yellow badges picking up all over town and going the wrong way and trashing the reputation of the taxi service, when the whole reason these green badges are working LCA is because whenever they pick up in town they go the wrong way and trash the reputation of the taxi service. At the end of the day, the knowledge yellow or green is a party trick that we did once years ago (twice in my case) and the badge colour tells you little about what the driver's knowledge is now.
Perhaps CCTV could be set up on the rank at LCA and any green badge who works their regularly could have his green identifier replaced by a yellow one, since his method of working makes it clear that although he did the green badge party trick some years ago, he's not really fit to be a green badge now (that is not a serious suggestion, although if regular retesting of the knowledge was ever introduced, I'm sure that the LCA green badges would all end up being demoted to the canary scum they love to deride). Personally I would never work any yellow badge rank now, because I consider it immoral for green badges to take yellow badges money when yellow badges have children to feed and no place else to earn, although I may renege on that when I get old and find town a struggle.
Green badges work LCA as they have a poor working Knowledge of London and don’t know where they are going, I have heard it all now!!!

DeleteLCA is not a suburban train station, where most of the work will go local. It is a LONDON airport and although a hiring my go anywhere a huge amount goes into town so green badges should feel it is right to rank up there if they so wish.

These protestations against the ID’s are getting more and more bizarre. Everything has been tried: such as it is an affront to Jews, families and children will be attacked in their homes, drivers will be slaughtered on the streets by other drivers and now this sort of rubbish that GBs who work LCA have a worse knowledge than YBs.
