While fury swept the screens of drivers smart phones, LTPH desperately tried to console the angry mob by making an announcement, that from early next week the service would be temporarily disabled, while further legal advise was taken and to give trade representatives a chance to consult further on the subject.
I was told by a spokesperson that the reason drivers details were available on-line was because they (TfL/LTPH) have a duty under the London cab act to supply drivers details to members of the public on request and that this service has been available for private hire for some time. LTPH have been informed by their legal department that this would not be a breach of the data protection act.
But an on-line data base, openly available to anyone is surely going too far and not quite what the London cab act meant by available on request...
I believe this is not only a breach of the data protection act, but also (as stated in previous post) the "European Human Rights Charter".
To prove my point about how dangerous this situation is, using software freely available on-line I found out the badge numbers, home addresses, number of people in the residence, names of neighbours and took photos from "Google street view" of the front doors of most of the UTC committee members. These details however will not be published, as this was purely an academic exercise.
I must thank Deputy Director of TPH Helen Chapman, who, as the fuss reach fever pitch, immediately contacted John Mason and together they agreed to disable the facility later this week until further notice.
I have been informed the reason badge numbers are to be displayed in such a large font on these controversial ID badges, is to assist licensing officers who as non warranted officers have no right to stop a Taxi for Badge and Bill or compliance checks if a driver refuses to stop.
But my argument is, private hire drivers are not compelled to have there badge number emblazoned on their windscreen in large format and in fact are allowed to hide their license details with tinted glass.
So how do Licensing/Compliance officers currently stop and check private hire drivers???
So again it would seem there is one rule for us and just guild-lines for them.
I am not totally opposed to some form of distinction between London central and suburban drivers if that's what the trade in general wants, but the ID badge that are intended to be issued this week are an insult to ever London licensed driver.
I believe a new design of ID badge with the drivers badge number not so prevalent would be a better compromise.

| Unacceptable............................................More acceptable |

If they want this why not issue each driver with a taxi plate to fix above the one already in place ... it could be green say transport for London but no badge number .. many drivers are already saying no to this and will refuse to have in the window ... I do not want to look or be a minicabs driver ... and it makes us look like them ...... no to minicabs style is badges !!!
ReplyDeletewhoever is responsible for this blatant breach of the data protection act should be sacked and any driver who has had there details searched should be paid compensation
ReplyDeleteAnother half baked idea from the clowns in Palestra, we are getting used to it.
ReplyDeleteStill as Mr Mason only talks to the masterminds of the LCDC committee, is to be expected.
Tomorrow "Monday" Im calling TFL to find out who is taking the flack for this, and ITS GOING TO COURT compensation is required and i will get it .
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 20:27 - presumably our licence fees will be increased to cover the cost of compensating you?
ReplyDeleteThe Minicab ID's are being replaced by a plate fixed externally to the rear of the vehicle, just as taxi's have, so they will be on display.
ReplyDeleteAlll this hysteria over names on a database. 5 people share my name on there, hundreds on directory enquiry, so why the 'hidden agenda' conspiracy post?
Your cab has a registration plate, I write to DVLA as the chair of a 'residents company', I tell them your cab is 'abandoned' on our land and I would like it removed, but I want to serve a notice on the registered keeper first to give them a chance to remove it, a couple of weeks later and £25 lighter, I have all your details from DVLA . . . . so why worry about names only on the PCO website?
besides, you have to show your badge with the number anyway if a punter or a PC wishes to see it.
Bit selfish mate, I'm alright five others with same name
ReplyDeleteWell my name is unique and u have used 192.com
Gives my address
My home where every night my wife and kids are left alone while I go out to work.
Just can't believe your selfish attitude and your paranoia
Hope there are not to many selfish arrogant drivers like you out there.

ReplyDelete8 comments about a rapist minicab driver
Something terribly wrong here
@ Gerry
ReplyDeleteNot being funny mate,But a minicab rapist is quite a common occurence thesedays,But revealing my name to all ussunder is not.
So far everybody is saying about the threat to the family,But look how harmful it could be to other parties,ie,Burglars. All they have to do is find the address of the single cab driver pay a visit no cab outside= empty house.
This is typical TFL saying you will do what we say,and they cant be allowed to get away with it.Personnaly I strongly believe someone should pay with their job,and it must be someone high up,not a poor minion.
People can see the cab is not on the drive to know you are at work and the strife is alone.... I have seen a lot of cab drivers fighting over airports or nicking jobs from ranks or overtaking each other , a couple of punch ups . But I've never seen a black cab ask any questions when mini cabs do the same thing in front our nose morning noon and night . I picked an aunty up to go to Victoria from the Cumberland one morning as I helped her with her case ,I was suddenly surrounded boxed in by two angry cab drivers and after explaining the situation , was told I would get a kicking if they saw me at the airport later.. It's funny how we only get brave when it's another black cab ..
ReplyDeleteYes everybody that knows me,Can see when the cabs not,Knows I am at work true. But I dont think the majority of burglars in London know where I live,And I for one want it to stay that way.Moving on to your next point. The reason we are reluctant to approach the scabs we are legal,They are not.And if the Police turn up,forget that they are touting,All they will be interested in is the accusation you used racist comments to them,Backed up by all the other scum. All you will see is the shitheads laughing as you are cuffed and put in the van,to spend the next few hours in a cell. They dont play by the rules,in fact it seems more and more they have the law on their side.
ReplyDeleteGerry, we're all agreed about rapist minicab drivers. We're not all agreed about ID stickers. There wouldn't be much point in 64 messages about rapist minicab drivers, with 63 of them saying "I agree".
ReplyDeleteI totally concur with the new design, Well said ttt.
ReplyDeleterespect eze
Mason has stated in a e mail to the RMT We expect
ReplyDelete> taxi drivers to treat the identifiers with the same level of respect and
> importance as their own badge." Would you leave your badge on the back seat ? Or in the front window ? No you wouldnt so im not putting mine in ,He also stated in this e mail "Clearly anyone who continually "loses" their identifiers would need to be
> warned to be more careful and could be subject to action " So their you go .
