There is to be a farewell to Big George Webley on the steps of All Souls Church, Portland Place, to take place between 1:45am and 2:00am on Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning this week 11 May 2011.
We hope Taxi drivers will turn up en masse to No.2 Portland Place next to Broadcasting House where we will be turning our lights off and holding a minutes silence in tribute to Big George, a true friend of the Taxi trade.

The presenter and musician died in the early hours of Saturday after collapsing at his home in Milton Keynes.
As a TV Presenter he hosted programmes such as BBC One's Inside Out for the London region, reported for The One Show and BBC regional news show Look East.
As a composer he devised the Have I Got News For You theme as well as arrangements for The One Show, One Foot In The Grave, Room 101 and The Office. He was also a musician on music show The Tube and bandleader for LWT's Telethon productions.
George was also a popular personality on BBC Radio London - which his partner former Crossroads actress Joanne Good also works for.
Lets celebrate his life with a musical interlude, his own unique take on 'Granddad'.
Well done Jim
ReplyDeleteLets hope the trade turn out in many numbers for our friend
Farewell old nighthawk friend.
ReplyDeleteHad tea with George in the Royal Oak a few times. Was a good friend to the Cab Trade but would never tip.
Radio presenters come and go,But must admit when I heard Big George had gone it sent a shiver down my spine. It was like I had lost a personal friend.RIP Big George
ReplyDeleteA beautiful wonderful knowledgable man and a big fan of the London taxi trade, he loved us and he loved the chat/banter.
ReplyDeletePlease make an effort to turn up tomorrow night for we have all lost a very dear friend.
Big George Webley may you Rest In Peace.
John Kennedy.
Have spoken to a few mates,we are all going.R.I.P. Big George.
ReplyDeleteIn Big George,we had a presenter who really loved London,And loved the Black Cab trade, even spending his own time having a chat and cuppa with us.often see him in Soho and a shout of Georgie, would put a big grin on his face and a friendly wave,So its only fair we give him a send off to remember,Please try to be there, make his family as proud of us as he was.
ReplyDeleteFelt proud to be part of the group that turned up to pay tribute to Big George this morning. It was great to see so many there,And as John Kennedy put it,Big George done something even in death that nobody has ever been able to do.Unite the cab trade,RIP BIG GEORGE WEBLY,Your a legend.
ReplyDeleteGARYS
Just like to say a big thank you to all the drivers who managed to attend this extraordinary tribute to Big George.
ReplyDeleteIt was amazing to see Taxi drivers and PHV drivers standing side by side (just for this one occasion)
Nice to meet his show regulars like Pam, steve from Harrow and Rainbow George.
Cuban Tony was one of the first to arrive and spoke to many shocked callers who were expecting a Che Gavarra look a like.
It was also nice to see so many of his personal friends and family members there including his partner Joe Good. John Kennedy did an amazing job putting this tribute together at such short notice
Losing a close friend is really hard because you pick your friends and they pick you, unlike family who are just there.
Drivers from LTDA, LCDC, Unite, the RMT and UCG stood side by side on the steps of the church for a minute silence and then sung a rather out of tune rendition of Wonderful World.
Now RIP Big George!
You managed to unite the Cab trade for one night, something we haven't seen in the capital since February 2009.
