Guess who's Got Your Back?....By Thomas the Taxi.

No one in their right minds wants to see a fleet of festering old bangers driving round London.
It would be fantastic to have a fleet of high-spec, up to the minute, low emission Taxis in time for the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games, for the whole world to see.

With more forethought and better planning (a scrappage scheme with subsidised road fund and fuel) we could have come close to achieving this goal. But instead of TfL looking after our interests, they have sought to "harmonise" and in some areas replace the "Best Taxi Service in the World" with an inferior private hire service that has shown time and time again, it can't be trusted or relied upon.

Every Bus is subsidised to the tune of £20,000 a year, even the ones that are being run by private companies. Massive profits for bus companies result in unbelievably high salaries to managers, with enormous bonuses paid out to shareholders. We will see in a couple of months, the Managing Director of TfL David Brown, leave his position for a post at a bus company for a staggering new salary of £1.4m a year.

Where is our subsidy?
If every Taxi received a comparable subsidy, our fleet would reflect the grant and would be made up of newer vehicles.

Back to reality!
We have just been told that the rise in VAT, although known about by TfL,was not factored in to our next meter adjustment due in April. No subsidy on fuel, no subsidy on the price of a new vehicle and we have been whacked by an unfair road fund license fee that is not consistent across the whole London Taxi fleet.

We now find that an age limit is to be introduced, in the Mayors words, "to clean up the dirty old cabs from the street".
And yet no scientific proof is available to back up his demand. His office has released colourful charts that purport to show how dirty Taxis are, but fails to explain how getting rid of older models will change this situation as new and old Taxis pass the same smoke test before being licensed.
His figures are also questionable as they are no more than guesstimates.

This is plainly a cosmetic exercise brought in to get rid of older models in time for the Olympics.

If you think this doesn't affect you then think again.
Being discussed on your behalf by the United Trade Group that includes only one fully working Taxi driver, is the possibility of prestige ranks for newer vehicles only and extra inspections for not so new Taxis.
Plus it has been discussed that older vehicles may lose their Congestion Charge exemption status!

This group of financially interested representatives (proprietors association, radio circuit entrepreneurs and manufacturers) have signed you up to a 15 year age limit with 2 MOT's (with SGS visits) and a full overhaul inspection. They are also discussing the possibility of older cabs having 2 MOT's and 2 major overhauls every year.

With the amount of Taxis taken off the road in the first three years, rented vehicles will become harder to find and there is much talk of a return of double teams working on the clock. Some proprietors have spoken of vehicles being rented in eight hour shifts!

What will happen to the old Taxis?
As there is no scrappage scheme in place, these vehicles will find their way into private ownership, so will still be out there adding to pollution levels. Without the regular servicing of Taxis, pollution levels of these vehicles will deteriorate. We may even see some working as unlicensed cabs as enforcement against touts from Joe Royles boys is at an all time low.

So, fewer vehicles to service a growing market of visitors.
Who will pick up this extra business?

You guessed it... TfL have recently been talking to the United Trade Group, about marshalled Private Hire Ranks with the introduction of a Gold, silver and bronze system for minicab's. This issue has been on the cards since the inception of the STaN agenda back in 2002 and has been discussed many times at Service Transport Committee meetings, in the presence of our man on the board of TfL.

Phase1. set up a bait to get empty cabs to drive past street hails. (Golden Fares rank reinstated last night)
Public outcry "Not enough Taxis". Taxis refuse to work from marshalled rank at Tiger Tiger as Golden rank more profitable, so blind eye turned to PHV touts.

Phase 2. Permission granted to implement new "Marshalled Private Hire Ranks".

Phase 3. Only newer Taxis to use prestige ranks, in prime positions.

Lets not forget the man waiting in the wings to take over from Boris who wants...
Phase 4. Private hire to have the right to ply for hire after 10 pm.

This is why it is imperative that we put in a legal bid to stop this expensive madness thrust upon the trade by people who show a bias towards our competition and have no knowledge of how our trade functions.
Alan Fleming's appeal is up and running and if you care about the future of your trade, then I suggest you contribute to the fund.Details of payment can be found at the top of the right hand column.

When you think about the group that has been set up to represent you at meetings with TfL, like me you would believe this group to be made up from elected members of Trade Unions and Trade Associations!
Well, you would be wrong.
John Mason has put up hurdles to stop representative groups, that don't support his views from attending workshops and meetings. He has actively invited members from private business with their own agenda to negotiate on your behalf.

Attending the last Trade workshop in May 2010 were;
Mike Hedges, Unite
Steve MacNamara, LTDA
Grant Davis, LCDC
Eddie Crossley, LMCPA
Peter DaCosta, KPM Taxis
Malcom Paice, Com Cab

John Mason, TfL
Helen Chapman, TfL
Luke Howard, TfL

Invited absentees,
John Russell, LTI
Brian Rice, Dial-a-Cab
Ivan Kovler, LMPCA.

Rapes increase by 54%.
Earlier this month in a radio interview, Peter Hendy was asked what he intends to do about the 54% increase in assaults including rapes in private hire vehicles?

He replied, "I do not recognise these figures. They have come from a militant cabby with a blog"
No Peter the figures came from the Metropolitan police and the TfL website.

We need a better way to make complaints.
What we need most of all peter is a quick and easy way to report PHV's that are breaking the law!
Then we need you to enforce the law.
How about a website, accessible by smart phone for drivers to report incidents, that would have immediate response?
I would pay double the current license fee for that Peter.

  1. It surprises me not that Peter Hendy know very little about how his department works and has made a piss poor attempt to malign The Anderson Shelter with political spin.

This quote is taken directly from the TfL website:

"Although there has been a 20 per cent fall in cab-related sexual offences since the Safer Travel at Night Campaign (STaN) was launched eight years ago, this year saw a 54 per cent rise compared to the previous year when offences reached their lowest level since records have been kept (93 in 2008/09 to 143 in 2009/10).

This increase is a stark reminder that unbooked minicabs still pose a very serious danger to the travelling public. "

I wonder which blog Peter Hendy was talking about, as Unite, and the Lcdc ran the exposure of STaN.... However, the Lcdc and Unite seem to have capitulated to the TfL agenda and The Anderson Shelter is the only blog to continue to expose the hidden lies and agenda of TfL.

  3. I have just read an article in one of the trade papers that goes under the heading of.
JOHN MASON FRIEND OR FOE. Whats intresting about this is its been adapted from a piece from a PHV magazine, its seems the straight PHV trade dont think MASON is up to the job either,A lot of thier greivances are the same as ours,TOUTING,SATELITE OFFICES,LACK OF ENFORCEMENT,ETC,
It implies MASON,does not care about the trade,us or phv,He will do or say anything just to further his career,
In most circumstances i would say,"you cant blame him for that".But in his present position that is not the right attitude, and he should be removed a.s.a.p.Because we are talking about public safety here. Most of us are mothers/ fathers, and it matters not how old they are,you still worry about your kids.Personaly i dont sleep until mine are in.
But you can only protect them so far,When your kids go to school you hand them over to the protection of teachers,It should follow that when they go out,you worry, but you should be able to know they will get home safely,The laws are there,Its not a nice feeling to know the man who has the power to get these laws enforced, does not do so.Just waffles on,only thinking about furthering his own career,
We are always being accused of being whingeing cabbies, but it seems even the phv trade has the same concerns. So we cant both be wrong.

  4. STaN,rapes,STaN,sexual assaults,STaN,STaN,STaN,54%,STaN,clipboard jonnies and STaN, illegal ranks of minicabs and STaN,STaN and satellite offices STaN,STaN,STaN,private hire marshalled pick up points and STaN,rapes, rapes, rapes and STaN, 143 rapes and sexual assaults and STaN, 68 dedicated police officers and STaN, the west end, although geographically small and STaN, identified hotspots and STaN, satellite private hire operating centres within the clubs,STaN,STaN,STaN,agenda and STaN, satellite cab desks in London clubs and STaN,STaN and the Olympic games,STaN,STaN,STaN.

And still Peter Hendy doesn't underSTaNed or grasp the 54% increase of rapes and sexual assaults, these statistics can be found well documented on TFL'S own website, what does Peter Hendy not underSTaNed,he is paid £350,000 per anum and he is unaware that these statistics can be found directly via the TFL website.

  5. I predict that satelite offices licences, will all be suspended, all touting will cease,as the police will arrest every single tout, and cars will be crushed.and offenders sentenced to prison,We will see BORIS,HENDY and MASON, on our tellys, billboards,in fact everywhere proclaiming what a great job, they have done to eradicate the problem and make London safe.
And in fact its not so far away,I predict you will see this action being taken two weeks before the start of the olympics, and ending a week after.then it will be back to normal

  6. So we had Malcolm Paice being consulted (I do not know him and no doubet he is a splendid chap).

    WHY???
The LTDA own 20% so they could have represented Com Cab, still maybe he was there looking out for Flightlink's Interests!!!!

Why not go the whole hog TfL, exclude anyone who has ever driven a cab in the last ten years and invite John Griffin?

Still could he do a worse job of looking after our (rather than their own) Interests?

Yet no one seems to be able to answer (or ask in the case of the UTG!) the million dollar question:
'How is air quality going to be improved by an arbitary age limit'?

The TX4 has higher Road tax due to emissions than a Fairway.

SHOW US THE LOGIC BEHIND THIS POLITICALLY MOTIVATED STUNT TfL?

  7. Peter Hendy commissioner of TFL.

Peter Hendy not aware of the 54% increase in rapes and sexual assaults.

Peter Hendy not aware of his own TFL statement on 23rd September 2010 regarding the 54% increase.

    Siwan Hayward is aware.

    Jo Chinn is aware.

    Kulveer Ranger is aware.

Yet the man with 34 years experience is unaware, unaware of the 54% increase in rapes and sexual assaults absolutely astonishing, how can somebody like this sleep at night.

STaN is a complete and utter failure, and TFL would like to see it buried for good, what a complete waste of public money.

In my opinion these are the facts, what do you think?

  8. A concerned taxi driverJan 31, 2011 03:26 AM

    We're screwed!!

Face it guys & gals, we as a trade are being slowly replaced by an inferior product. There is nothing new in this practice; PCSOs replacing police officers is one example and i'm sure others can cite more.

There is no one with any real clout fighting our corner and whilst we have the muppets playing up to TfL we don't have a hope in hell of anything positive happening to the betterment of our trade. Statler and Waldorf would put up a better fight against some of the idiotic policies being dished out by TfL than those other two twats boddy and mcnamoron!

We've had a good run; 300 odd years but with people now accepting that shatnav can do our job; immigrants needing work and PH filling that void nicely and the fact that goverment wants all labour workforce directly controlled by one or 2 key organisations you can see why within 20 years (i'm being generous with my timeline) the good old London taxi will be consigned to the history books, PH will be the norm and the likes of AL or Lewis Day will be the employers!

The older generation will decry the passing of the iconic cabbie but the youngsters (the ones who currently get in and say to you "W1c 2PQ) won't give it a seconds thought as they are used to inferiority by the way the Country as a whole is being run - there is no room for a superior product in 21st Century Britain.

Look at our customer base now. Years ago it was the executive going to Surrey or the airport and the minicab dealt with the drunk youngsters from the local boozer - now it's role reversal; we pick up the young revellers whilst the fancy merc or BMW races the exec back to his pad in Surrey or deepest Essex. We've lost hotel work; lose anything decent from the top clubs or bars not to mention the volume of work both to and from the airports - we're a dying trade on it's last knees fighting its hardest for survival but knows deep inside that it's only a matter of time. The sad thing is that even with all the recent action taken by a small group of passionate individuals the wider group of cabbys and driver organisations still can't see what is happening or are prepared to back up their own! They prefer to play the high game with the TfL executives because they feel somehow it garners them with some air of respectability or indulges their whim of self importance! Idiots!

the death knell is being sounded for the trade and once the final bell tolls i hope i'm there to see the likes of peter rose, grant davies and steve mcnamara going cap in hand to the likes of John Griffin (yes the lack of capitals in their names is intentional as i actually have more respect for John Griffin as at least he gives his industry 100% support) for a job within his organisation as they try and convince him they are over qualified in public transportation and should really be on his board as directors - well guess what steve, peter and grant? - he will laugh his little socks off at you, you bunch of incompetent amateurs. He wants people in his organisation who have scruples and are prepared to defend the rights of his workers; not go sucking up to the authorities because they want to roll over and be Hendys or Masons play thing.

I'll see you in the dole queue or maybe in the waiting room of AL as we try and convince them we're the better candidate over and above the newly arrived immigrant who is willing to work all the hours his particular god sends in order he can build a new life for himself and his family whilst we want the comfy life of working our set hours; drinking tea on ranks and "mashalling" taxis to the rank at Paddington - it will be a wake up call for us but i hope to my particular God that it's a damn rude awakening for you three.

You've sold us out you bloody parasites!

  11. Bob Oddy and the Ltda put their "Hands Up" and surrendered to TfL.

Grant Davis went down for John Mason "Took A Dive" for TfL.

Peter Rose and Unite, well lets face it he has always been a doormat for somebody. Rumour is he doesn't wait for doors to open; he just slides under the opening beneath the door!

  12. When the mountain crumbles into the seaJan 31, 2011 06:34 PM

I am reliably informed MacNamara and Grant Davis are going underground on a very select forum.

When confronted about the hidden agenda behind STaN or the meeting on the Tuesday after half term before Christmas, they refuse to engage and disappear. Some of the more well informed UTG members are calling it conspiracy of silence!
