Major traffic jams were caused throughout Hammersmith and Fulham after a fatal crash closed the A4 during yesterdays rush hour.
A tipper truck travelling out of London crossed the central reservation just after passing Chiswick House, colliding with a black taxi and seriously injuring one of three male passengers, who died later in hospital.
The taxi driver and two other passengers were described as 'walking wounded' and were taken to Charing Cross Hospital. The truck driver suffered shock and was taken to a separate hospital.
Long delays were caused on key routes through Hammersmith and Fulham while investigations were carried out, with gridlocked traffic on Fulham Palace Road and North End Road until late in the evening.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the victim, who is yet to be identified.
The A4 was shut both ways while the scene was investigated.
The crash happened at about 4pm on Tuesday and the A4 was reopened just after midnight on Wednesday.
Officers from the road death investigation unit at Hampton are looking into the crash and are urging any witnesses to call them on 020 8941 9011.
It has been reported today that the driver has been charged with dangerous driving.
The question here is what would have been the outcome had the driver and three passengers been in a saloon car or people carrier?
Did the taxi design and build prevent further injury?
Traffic incidents seem to be bring West London to a state of gridlock on a regular basis. The Police seem to be clueless, with no plans for dispersing motorists trapped in the ensuing carnage. This is general believed to be the consequence of local boroughs insistence on closing off so called rat runs on side streets. Hence when there is a emergency, there is no where for traffic to escape.

We certainly pay a fuel and ride penalty for the heavy build of the TX cabs but a tragic incident like this highlights just how tough they are when you need it.

ReplyDeleteIt is with respect for our reputation that the question was asked. Had these three people been traveling in a ford Galaxy we could have been looking at more fatalities. The article (taken from the BBC website is breaking news and was posted as such. If you feel that reporting of a fatal accident is in bad taste then I suggest you complain to the BBC, ITV and the press associasion as all carried reports, some even mentioned the strength of build of a taxi and don't forget! the clock is ticking, it will soon be the 14/15
