Golden Fare Rank Goes Live....By Thomas the Taxi

Based on an idea given to Martin Low by a caller to the James Whale drive time show on LBC 97.3, the long awaited “Golden Fare” rank has finally been given the go ahead by TfL. The rank will be based at the junction of Coventry and Wardour Street and run from 10pm till 4am.

After many months of negotiation with the different authorities involved, the rank will finally goes live tonight on historically the busiest night of the year. Marshalled by the LTDA, it will continue to run on Friday and Saturday nights for an limited period, to ascertain its effectiveness. But  Mr Low stated on the BBC lunch time news that if it proves unworkable, they will try something else.

Prospective customers will approach a marshal, who will enter the destination on to an iPad. They will then be informed of a fixed price and if agreeable, the driver is then paid up front. A receipt (containing the destination and fixed price) will then be issued  by the Marshal.
This will not be a directional rank and Jobs will not be married up by the marshals.
Any driver putting on this rank will be expected to take what ever job is next in line up to a 12 mile limit.
In conjunction to this Golden Fare rank, Martin Low mentioned a new “Part Time” Taxi rank on the Bus Stand  (site of the old minicab rank) in Whitcomb Street, where drivers who do not wish to participate in the scheme can operate normally.

There are a few worrying aspects with this scheme, such as the heavy congestion caused by illegal ranking of private hire touts. This must be tackled by the Council and Cab Enforcement.
Lets not forget, there will be a sea of hands all over the West End at these peak times and drivers must decided for themselves whether it would be detrimental to leave these people stranded and at the mercy of the touts.

Another problem, is leaving the rank once a pick up has been made. Wardour's exit towards Shaftesbury Avenue is closed to all traffic including Taxi’s till midnight and is vigorously enforced by Westminster Parking Services enforcement cameras.

If Mr Low is so keen for this rank to be successful, perhaps he should arrange the signage to read “No entry except Taxi’s”, this would make leaving the area much easier.

With just a few tweaks, quite a lot of the strain could be taken off the shoulders of drivers wishing to use this rank.

Even so, the travelling public must not be deserted in other locations throughout the city.

................................................

Many Taxi drivers feel Westminster has constantly turned its back on the enforcement of parking restrictions when it comes to private hire vehicles and we have seen impromptu minicab ranks spring up all over the West End.

Here are the main reasons drivers are apprehensive about servicing the centre of the West End at weekends;
  • Congestion caused by lines of Private Hire Vehicles parked up and touting, unabated by Police or wardens.
  • Violent confrontation from Private Hire Drivers parked on license Taxi ranks.
  • Lack of police officers available to help Taxi drivers caught up in incidents.
  • Victimisation from Westminster’s CCTV with the ridiculous 2 minute limit on picking up and dropping off.
All these problems are fixable.
If illegal parking /touting problems were to be tackled properly, congestion would eased and we would see more drivers willing to work on weekends nights.

  1. Can someone please tell me where the incentive is for me to fight my way through the gridlock to get to it?

Why on earth would I want to pass countless hands trying to flag me down, to get there only to find that I will have to overrank and give any of the money I might earn straight to Westminster Council by way of a parking fine?

This is the brainchild of Martin Low, a man who has probably never even set foot in a Taxi let alone driven one.

What qualifies him to start making Taxi policy and setting Taxi fares?

And who will be marshalling it?

Well surprise suprise it Mr 2 Sugars himself!

Why is this rank not a 'going home' rank?

What was wrong with Cranbourne St?

It worked, and the reason it worked was because drivers could get a job going in their direction.

What makes Martin Low think this will work?

Especially when it is a fecking nightmare getting to it with Lisle St closed to traffic.

This is a complete farce, put together by an incompetent who knows nothing about the working practises of a cab driver.

Or is it just a stealth minicab rank?

We know Martin low doesn't give a rats arse about the Taxi trade by his refusal to let us stop at a toilet, so why should we think this will in any way be beneficial to us?

  2. Yesterday, LBC were boasting in their "soundbites" how the Golden Rank idea was hatched on their station.
This is the same station that has our good friend Ken Livingstone as a presenter. The man who invented TfL, changed our right to refuse under 12 miles, took away our extras and installed people to oversee us who had no idea about our trade or work practices.
    LBC = LET'S BETRAY CABBIES

  3. Cant see how driving passed passengers can be good for trade!
If we do not pick up people in Berkeley Street there are touts just waiting to clear up that trade.

Passengers are not going to walk miles to get to a rank where they will be charged more than the metered fare, they will just use mini scabs.

If TfL hadn't made such a pigs ear of managing the traffic in London their wouldn't be so many traffic hotspots and streets that cab drivers avoid like the plague. This is one of the reasons that mini-cabs flourish. But then again turning London into a third World ghetto was Ken Livingstones great vision for central London.

It doesn't need millions of pounds to be spent on a theory based policing policy like STaN that actually helps sexual predators and rapists. Just a little common sense. TfL created the environment for crime to flourish. We cant work the streets properly and the police cant police them either. Hence STaN, if you have people and police that are not capable of doing their jobs. What better than a strategy to make look like you at least know what you are doing. Throw as much money at the problem as you like TfL, but the rapes, sexual assaults and crime are not going to go away!

The Leicester Square 'Golden Share' rank starts today.

This will be a prepaid fixed fare rank, and will be run on a '1st cab 1st job' basis.

Can someone please tell me where the incentive is for me to fight my way through the gridlock to get to it?

Why on earth would I want to pass countless hands trying to flag me down, to get there only to find that I will have to overrank and give any of the money I might earn straight to Westminster Council by way of a parking fine?

This will fail because it's in the wrong place, and will soon be swamped with scabs, probably with the blessing of the authorities, and will soon be the first of many.

And only a cynic would think that the best jobs would given to their mates, and the sh*te given to you and me.

And don't get me started on the 'shared' part of it.

The fare will be fixed for one destination only.

5 p*ssed up heroes all going to Putney.

Well hold on mate just a bit further... we meant Mortlake.

Pay you more money... Bollox mate we've already paid...

Shut the f*ck up or we'll tear you and your cab apart!

Mr Mason said the driver will have a docket with the destination and the rules on it, and if there's any trouble the driver should call the police.

What planet does he live on?

This is 2010 John, where the police don't show up!

Especially in the arse end of nowhere.

    Disaster waiting to happen!!!

  8. I think it's really great that Bob Oddy who has been driving a cab for 44 years should come on here tonight and tell us all about the great rides that he has had from the golden shower ran

There's nothing like a b it of LTDA spin.

    Regards,

    STan Gate,

  9. Does anyone know who was marshalling the rank on the first night?

  10. Negative...?
Sorry you got that from this article. It was meant to portray constructive criticism.

I'm glad you had a positive experience tonight, hope it continues, but not at the expense of potential taxi riders in other parts of the West End.

  11. we are also getting to close to operating without Meters.
No meter, doesn't matter which way you go
    So knowledge is not needed
Why then would we need an expensive Taxi.

WE could all wind up driving Mini cabs within a few years
That's the agenda you have been warned
don't start crying foul when you have to go back to your old profession

The reason it was busy on this rank tonight was that the scabs were charging double fare

  12. So anon takes a punter to Westminster Bridge for £20. Sorry mate I don't do rip offs that is for the scabs.

Actually I don't believe you, anyone going to Westmister Bridge would have walked

This is just a ploy by Westminster and TFL to make the UTG feel important. It's positioned in the worst place possible. When it doesn't work they'll use it against us as proof there's not enough cabs at night. When I was a member of the Club they never seemed to point out to their good friend Mason that this was only a problem a few hours a week, but the rest of any day or night there were plenty of cabs avaiable. The UTG already got us a 15 year age limit, are they also doing a deal to allow mini-cabs to ply for hire at weekends?

  14. Anon will work the rank as it appealed to his greed and allowed him to overcharge legally. But where was he at 2.30am?
Took a job to Wembley for £40 after I Told Marshal I was going West...passengers X4 were going to get another 'cab' from there to Slough via 3 additional places enroute. I negotiated a fare for their safe journey home to all points. This rank will only succeed in their is a directional element!
It can be easily operated by drivers displaying a number on their windscreen 1-12.
12 being North, 3 East, 6 South and 9 West....
Drivers obliged to take first job to Destination which matches his displayed number + or - 1.
So for example, driver going West will do range 8 or 10

  15. FIXED PRICE,CASH UP FRONT,what a brilliant idea, why has nobody ever thought of this before,Hold on they have every bloody minicab office in LONDON......So what we saying here,We keep on about how we are far better than them, then take thier work practices.Either we are equal or we are not.

  16. It's amazing how easy Martin Lowe has turned Licensed Taxi drivers into his prefered scabs. Just by waving the thought if a twenty pound note under your nose for a local. The scabs are in a win win situation. You are getting the public used to paying a high minimum fixed price and are leaving customers on the street to be picked off by the predators.

  17. Mark the cabby18/12/2010 22:55

It won't be the private hire trade that finnishes off the Licensed Taxi trade. By our own greed, we will do it for them.
Charging more than the meter is wrong and Mason should never have agreed to it. The sooner we get rid of this muppet the better. See Oddy couldn't resist the smell of £50 an hour.

  18. Nothing is stopping a driver saying when a local is given,----i will do it on the meter it will go less, pay me at the end,or is there.

  19. A likely extract from Echo 99 Addison Lees's house magazine:

' Greedy Cab Drivers Tuck in'
as if the meter wasn't enough the black cab drivers have found another way to fleece the public etc. etc.....

Sometimes I wonder if this stunt is designed to undermine us?

It can do us no good, I wonder what TfL will do when the first complaint arrives at Palestra?

They cannot blame Martin 'Beau Brummel' Low, he is just Westmonsters highways officer as TfL are the licensing authority.

What we need is a well marshalled (by all trade orgs.) going home rank in the Haymarket.

    Simples!

  20. Greedy Cab Drivers Tuck in' Ho Ho the add on Lee slave says LOL !
Please check your own prices before casting judgements.

Black cabs hailed of the street are dirt cheap for in town rides, and the Regular riding London public KNOW this, but who in their sane mind is going to say anything is "Cheap" This rank can be tweaked and I would like to see maybe 6/7 all over the west end for late nights where passenger can turn up and " know" what they are going to pay , no ones asking for these ranks all day just at night...It would be a massive step against the scum touts and if positioned right could be well served by the London Black cab trade.

  21. Please remember folks This rank is there as an INCENTIVE to drivers, ffs take it as face value for a change, Yes Some journeys local from the rank may go more but then again 5 going to purley for a nifty are a getting a very very good bargain, just do not get drivers moaning about it actually being to expensive...sucks so bad this trade at times.

  22. Danny,

The meter is there to protect us and trhe punter, break the link and we are done for!

If I wanted to turn people over I could go the long way around, bung doorman or even get my car out and hang outside Smiths or Abacus.

I don't because I am a professional cab driver, not some herbert driving a PHV whilst his own regular trade is in the doldrums or as a stepping stone after arriving from elsewhere.

Taking £20 to go to Waterloo is sure going to do us some real harm.

I will be writing in to John Mason on this and the GLA and even Trading Standards. I think it's little more than theft.

    THINK ABOUT IT!
