With UTG Victories like this who needs Defeats!...By Travis B

Dear All,
Published in the Badge.
Remember the greatly announced UTG victory about getting Mr Mason to suspend any more satellite offices being issued until the result of the 'yet to be announced' consultation.

I quote Mr Mason's response in red, to an email after complaints that satellite office licences are still being issued;

Thank you for your email and I apologise for the delay in my response.

The two main exceptional circumstances we refer to are;
(1) a recommendation from the police supporting the application due to transportation issues for the customers late at night
Where would this be, you can hail a cab anywhere in the Met? They could even call a PHV or Radio Taxi?
and
(2) where the premise has a licensing condition from the local authority in that it must make provision for its customers to have access to transportation late at night.
As Above where would this be? Give us some examples?

We would, on a 'ad hoc' basis review an application that may have a unique situation supporting it.

I hope this answers your question, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information.

Regards

John Mason

Taxi and Private Hire Director.

So lets looks at what this means in practice:

  • When someone applies or renews their entertainment or licensed premises it often enters into a negotiation with the Council and Police about what conditions are required prior to the licence being issued/renewed.

  • It is assumed that both the Police and Council would be receptive to any such condition being included:

  1. It allows the licensee to circumvent the Satellite Ban.

  2. It makes it looks as if the Police and the Council are concerned about the public.

  3. What premises WOULD NOT WANT this condition imposed.
So there we have it a ban not worth the paper it's written on, The UTG and the PCO claiming action and as ever the working cab driver being shafted by the continuation of the 'licence to tout' that the satellite office set up permits allowing vulnerable people to be ferried about in unsafe uninsured vehicles.

Please Mr Mason no more attending meetings of cab trade organisations telling us you are acting on an issue when you know your action will be totally ineffective or issuing notices that are in effect works of fiction.
Any news on the 'We have just appointed Night Enforcement Officers', Have they started?
Have you permission to recruit them even?

Please UTG no more taking the trade for mugs, I am a member of NONE of the UTG organisations, surely this is the last straw for those still loyal to them.

Safer Travel at Night!!!!!!

Editorial Comment, TtT:

One Question that must be asked is;

Did the UTG know that the LTPH were still going to keep issuing satellite office licenses?

If so then why the big headlines saying ALL satellite offices suspended.

If Not WHY NOT.

  1. Ever tried to get a 'real' taxi in peckham high street at 02.00am taking five teenagers to catford. It ain't happening. Till it does these exceptions will be commonplace. However, they won't be able to argue that in Haymarket, not till november/december when the same will apply there.
    I often read these articles berating the trade groups/organisations etc for inaction and failure to challenge in the courts etc and I can't work out why the authors and the trade as a whole can't see that nobody gives a toss for what cabdrivers think, we are a minority and have no clout whatsoever! If any of 'our' representatives are standing up for our position against the illegal actions of rogue minicab drivers, their interests are outweighed by the 60/70 000 minicab drivers. Why not get the minicab drivers leaders on board and get some proper draconian measures to punish the crooks? because they are too busy contradicting what each other say all the time.
    The'trade' is not finished. The taxio trade I work in is alive and full of characters and there a an awful lot of nice new tx4's out there.
    What's wrong with the trade? The old fellow in a fairway who pulled alongside me and a couple of my friends who were taking a break and laughed as he told us that the couple of young fellows outside barbican station should know better than to say south norwood to old people. Funny at the time, but of course, another one up to the opposition.
    The brazillian rapists in the uninsured pedal deathtraps are my personal bugbear, I hate them all and I haven't even met most of them. How does anybody think the government is going to ban them? Like minicabs they are here and provide a 'service' and meet a demand. They will never be banned, it doesn't matter how much noise we make, so why not concentrate on battles we can win. Minicabs are here to stay as well we all need to accept it. As far as satellite offices are concerned, please don't tell me anybody at all is thinking TfL or whoever is in charge will shut them down, this will not happen. The very best we can hope for is what is proposed above, the trade bodies know this and have experience in dealing with these committees and quangos and therefore don't waste their time, effort and our money fighting battles that are already lost. Clogging up WC2 for a couple of hours won't change anything either, the work can be taken back but only on the street with your light on taking the drunks home, if there is no work for the scabs when it is busy, there won't be any scabs when it's quiet.

  2. This Mason will etch NOTHING in stone.05/09/2010 16:21

    The Anderson shelter is going from strength to strength leading the way. John Mason is fast becoming a total farce in the position he holds!

    John Mason TfL : Total Fu##Ing Liar. He has no concept of the legislation or law pertaining to Licensed Taxis. He admitted this at the LCDC AGM! A basic fundamental for the position he holds, and I think ..... totally under qualified for this position of Director of Taxis and Private hire TfL.

    Mason has now stepped one too many steps into the minefield of licensed Taxi legislation that he neither knows or understands. Remove this political manipulator NOW!!!

    Just read The Badge. Is it my imagination....or, have the L.C.D.C. put John Mason on the committee.

    It does appear that the once great bulldog has had its balls castrated and all that is left is a PUSSY!

    It's a shame chip shops are no longer allowed to use newsprint. If they were The Badge would be in much demand by this industry. What is this trade becoming?

  5. Well John Mason, has shown exactly what he thinks of us,Well maybe its time to show him exactly how powerful we can be,I am not talking about a demo here,What i suggest is one monday no drivers pick up from Paddington stn,the schools will be back,work should be a bit better,so,and for the drivers that are thinking,good more work for me i suggest we have a photographer there,maybe they wont be so keen when they know there faces will be pictured everywhere,The reason i pick PADDINGTON is because of the knock on effect it will have,They will have to close the station,Okay so Heathrow will run like a drain,so go to heathrow,this wont be a demo,as such but i think it will have the desired effect,after all theres no law to say when we can turn our light off.But will leave Johnny boy in deep shit,if we dont act now its over,In my mind its just proof that GRIFFIN dictates,remember the post where he says he will have no problen getting satelite offices in Hotels,well this proves its true,GARYS

  8. Well Mr anonymous (or is it mouse),

    What's your answer, Keep taking it up the chuffer until their is no trade left?

    A well publicised campaign with carefully planned direct action (demos, pickets outside GLA etc.) should get the public on side. It's about their safety and the woeful actions of TfL.

    Do not worry about the PHV trade waiting to step in, whenever there is any action, plenty of our 'own' carry on working.

    Who are you with us or them?

  10. The bottom line is the public,dont give a F***,as far as they are concerned they are getting into a licensed vehicle,And as TFL do nothing to make it clear its illegal,and they are uninsured,they through ignorence think they are okay,Surely there is someone on here that can design a poster,that we can put on our partition screen that explains this and gives the up to date info,on how many sexual assaults and rapes are commited in licensed PHVs,The LTPH wont like that,but as the minicab trade has proved just tell them to F*** off,they wont act,because the last thing they need is the public to be asking what do they actually do
