Around 3am I found myself in the Victoria area, so I went to have a look for myself.
When I arrived, the Y reg TX1 was still laying on its side and scene of crime officers (SOCO) were still taking photographs. At first the officers in attendance were not very helpful, but when I explained I was a Taxi driver and concerned about the welfare of the driver and passengers their mood changed.
The officer in charge told me that they were not very happy with the driver as he had "Done a Runner".
I was shocked at first, but the more I think about it, the more it doesn't add up.
No London Taxi driver (IMO) would have it away for the scene of an accident of this magnitude. Two 70 year old American tourists had to be cut from the cab and rushed to hospital. They were said to be in a critical condition.
The Taxi had been hit broadside, as it travelled north past the Victoria Palace Theatre towards Grosvenor Gardens. A white Toyota Mini cab coming from the Station, struck the Taxi smack in the middle, turning it over on to its off side.
But why was a Toyota minicab coming out of the station at this exit?

If the Mini cab driver had obeyed the Law this accident would never have occurred.
There is no way a private hire vehicle can legally exit this section of Victoria Station. The signs are clear, only Licensed Taxis and Buses can use Terminus Place.
The attitude of Addison Lees owner Mr John Griffin who has encouraged his drivers to break the law and use bus lanes on the M4 and also Terminus Place is a contributory fact in this incident. Even though it was not one of his drivers directly, other mini cabs are attracted to use restricted roads when they see Addison Lee contravening traffic signs.
But this does not excuse the behaviour of the driver of the Taxi.
I suppose we will have to wait to see if this hits the press, to find out the full story.

- Was this a yellow badge driver who panicked.
- Was the vehicle stolen

Horrendous !
ReplyDeleteFirst thoughts are for the passengers and hope they are ok.
It doesn't quite add up, why would a Taxi driver do a runner when there is so much to link him to the vehicle, Badge/Plate ?
I think there is a lot more to this, A YB ? Stolen ? Borrowed ?
Will we ever know ?
I highly doubt that this taxi was being driven by a legitimate London taxi driver.
ReplyDeleteLet us all hold steam until we are fully debriefed with the FACTS.
The time for speculation is not now.
eze
My thoughts are with the passengers and hope they are going to be ok.
ReplyDeleteJust curious how did the cabbie do a runner ?
Cab is flipped over on drivers side, door is unable to open ?
Ok lets assume the for a moment, that the driver moves across a flipped over cab through the luggage area opens the door and then does a runner, whilst the inevitable helpers from th earea around Victoria all stand around not helping him or if he tried to run restraining him, and if it was so easy to open the side doors that had been so obvioulsy hard impacted so as to flip the cab over why was the roof cut to get the passengers out as well ?
OK the passengers are in a bad way so that was probably the best way to get them out safely but something just doesnt quite add up here.
Was it the Minicab driver that did the runner ???
Shocking!
ReplyDeleteYes, let's wait for the facts on this one.
What it does show is the consequences of the anarchy on our streets caused by the PCO (now LTPH at our expense) by their abject failure to enforce the law.
ReplyDeleteIf the PCO had done its duty:
1. The mincab would not have been there in the first place.
2. Possibly the chancer (if that is what explains the runner) in the cab would not have been behind the wheel.
What Next, a multi fatality crash on the M4 on a misty morning caused by a minicab in the bus lane?
No adequate budget for enforecement but no problems to spend out on 'rebranding'!!!!
Still we are sure the UTG have taken them to task at the meetings, Maybe if we had the minutes we could tell!
All Best wishes to the passengers, lets hope they have atop notch American legal team taht 'drill down' to the root of the causes!
There is no excuse for the driver to do a runner, taxi driver or not,esp as the crash was obviously not his fault,But i doubt if we will ever know the true facts of what happened,As the fact a black cab driver got out and run, makes better newsprint,in fact i bet theres no mention of the minicabs exiting ilegally
ReplyDeleteI to hope the passengers are well and make a full recovery, but how on earth can one say this accident is Mr Griffins doing(you sad mixed up person you got PH mixed up with ilegal black Taxis now) i supose Griffin paid for the black taxi driver to run, of course he did not, why should he, he does not want to wipe the taxi trade out, because without them he has no competition, competition is good, keep barking boys.

ReplyDeleteThe easiest answer to that is,should the minicab been exiting from terminus place,NO,and why blame GRIFFIN,well quite simply he instructs his drivers to break the law,so M4 buslane or terminus place, makes no difference, the minicab should not have been there end of story,God forbid but if any of these 2 die,the minicab driver will go to prison,MINICAB drivers are not "TAXIS"even though the misguided fools think they are
ReplyDeleteA copper I was talking to said most people who do runners either nicked the car or are pissed.
ReplyDeleteLet,s hope the truth comes out and it wasn't a real taxi driver.
